Two of our Year 5 students (and their mums), joined me to do some after school citizen science at our local Tiny Forest in Southmead. We got to take weather measurements, identified trees and measured their height and diameter (10cm up the stem). The children got to use digital calipers and measuring tape as well as recording all their data scientifically. We also got to meet representatives from Earthwatch and two scientists from Bath Spa University who showed us how to measure the water carrying capacity of the soil (which is important for flood preevention). We had an amazing time and both mums are now keen to help us with fundraising to get more trees at school!
